I have a 1967 Bristol Lodekka FLF with a Gardner motor, here in
Christchurch New Zealand. This vehicle is in use 7 days a week, doing
general charter work. I am in the process of restoring it. I have recovered
the seats with black vinyl, and am in the process of replacing the floor
covering with a wood grain floor vinyl.
What I am contacting you about is the possibility of telling me a possible contact for parts for the gearbox. I have lost 2nd gear, and can not find people still with parts. The model is
an RV28, Unit # UR1668, List # 9626. This is air operated, remote mounted.
Awaiting your reply, thanking you Ken Watson

Also – advice and knowledge on running a classic / vintage coach. What pitfalls are there? Best insurers? To service myself or get a professional? Petrol or diesel? Storage tips? Best clubs? Best rallies / shows? Anything else?

Just a progress report on our exclusive insurance scheme on preserved buses and coaches with Chaucer Insurance from Rigton Chartered Insurance Brokers.

True insurance professionalism combined with enthusiasm and passion for your vehicles has been illustrated by the fact that this year we have attended no less than 32 bus and coach rallies since April, each one followed by a full week in the office in usual best suit! At times a number of us attended different rallies in different areas on the same day.

Best weather was Canvey Island last month and the worst weather Blackpool in June. Showbus and Lathalmond were blessed with good weather. As the rally season draws to a close (or does it really - it is only 8 weeks to the Winchester rally on 1st January) I would like to thank all those people we spoke to who have become friends, and those who transferred their business to us, and who recommended us.

I encountered vehicles I travelled to school upon; vehicles I saw when they were brand new, liveries of long lost bus companies and operators that I knew. Often vehicles older than their owners.

A 23 year old who has his own web site and films on You Tube for his iconic and perfectly preserved 22 year old vehicle.

Some vehicles I saw week after week in different areas. How many vehicles never attend rallies I wonder? Perhaps such one elusive vehicle I did see was a Haslingden Leyland Titan in Manchester. Some had travelled long distances, London to Blackpool (only to be buffeted by gales and sea spray); Nottingham to Lathalmond.

Having been in insurance since I was 18 and our having been specialist bus and coach Insurance Brokers for well over 10 years I can advise you of the names of the specialist bus and coach insurance companies that are happy and comfortable with insuring double deck buses as follows.

Brit
Chaucer
Ensign / QBE
Summit

I would estimate that these 4 insure roughly 95% of double deckers in the UK. There are a few newcomers who have cautiously entered the market in recent years, which I have not mentioned, such as AIG and Norwich Union.

Many other insurance companies are not bus and coach specialists. Being a specialist is important as if any third party claim against you in connection with your bus is not handed with the amount of tact and bus experience required for such vehicles then you could be the loser. I know of a recent case where £52,000 was awarded to a passenger who had fallen inside a bus.

I think it is fair to say that if any other insurance company covers your double deck vehicle it is probably because a broker has urged them into a special deal with them somewhere along the line, and in all truth it is outside that insurance companies comfort zone. I have genuinely flinched when I have been shown copies of certificates for insurers that the insurance market when I know that particular insurer does not like them. Double deckers bring real problems - low bridge damage to the vehicle and the roof of the bus - passengers falling down the stairs, or from rear platforms not to mention there might be 80 passengers, or more, on board.

Whether it be single deck, double deck, bus or coach we chose Chaucer Insurance because they are the REAL experts in Preserved Bus Insurance, and we would urge you to do so. The person who arranged the scheme there 15 years ago is still in charge and really welcomes YOUR business and knows your passions inside out, as do we.

Chaucer offer quality 24 hour Breakdown cover at £80.00 plus £4.00 tax

It is worth studying our website www.rigtoninsurance.co.uk

There you will see the names of no less than eight people here that can help with preserved bus insurance. You may also notice that we have achieved the status of Chartered Insurance Brokers, one of less than 50 to have achieved this highly regarded standard in the UK. Unlike some of our competitors we have been established for over 30 years.

Our scheme caters for
Drivers of ALL ages (under 25s and over 70s do need to be referred - so far we have accomodated 17 year olds and 79 year olds)
Free bus services
Occasional Private Hire - we have another scheme for Private Hire - older / preserved vehicles
Comprehensive cover from £125 tax
